This group is positively awe-inspiring. I got the opportunity to see Purity Ring live a couple of weeks ago during spring break. In short, it was one of the best musical experiences of my life. The instrumentation was absolutely professional, and the stage show was itself a masterpiece of visual expression. Those lights in the topmost picture? Those are actually instruments; Corin Roddick (pictured here) used these color-shifting, lamp-like arrangements as MIDI triggers, activating samples in real time using a pair of mallets (marimba players, rejoice). Megan James (directly above) provides remarkably poignant and cryptic lyrics, delivered hauntingly and with hearty helpings of digital manipulation (see: The Knife). I’m hoping for a very strong future for this particular group. Purity Ring has brought (and hopefully, will continue to bring) something undeniably beautiful and different to the genre of electronic music. We’re all anticipating a new release sometime near or on July 24th, but in the meantime, be sure to check out “Belispeak” below. They also have “Ungirthed” and “Lofticries” (both incredible) posted on their Tumblr and Soundcloud.
Onward, my friends!
